About this work

Fruit, Knife and Napkin

Pears and apples crowd a table edge, their skins painted in bruised greens and rusted reds. This still life, Fruit, Knife and Napkin, comes from the hand of Albert Marquet, a painter who found drama in the humblest breakfast things. A steel blade lies diagonally across white linen, its handle catching a cold glint against the soft folds. The napkin itself becomes the real subject, creased and pooled, rendered in greys and ivory with loose, confident brushwork. Behind it all, a dark ground presses the fruit forward until each round form glows. Quiet and domestic, it suits a kitchen wall or a small dining alcove where morning light does the rest.
