Fruit Bowl

A white bowl piled with oranges, lemons and apples fills the canvas, its fruit glowing against a tablecloth of deep violet and blue. Bonnard lets color do the structure: each orange is a small sun built from layered vermilion and cadmium strokes, while the shadowed side of the bowl slides into plum and slate. Background detail dissolves into dappled washes, leaving the fruit to carry the whole composition. A kitchen, dining nook or breakfast room with warm light suits this still life of everyday abundance.
