Frontispiece to the Book of Poems V. Ivanov Cor Ardens

A flaming heart, ringed by curling tongues of fire, anchors the frontispiece Konstantin Somov drew for the Symbolist poet Vyacheslav Ivanov, whose Latin title Cor Ardens translates as the burning heart. Fine pen and ink linework does all the talking: parallel strokes build each flame, tight crosshatching darkens the scrollwork beneath, and a sinuous border of art nouveau tendrils runs down the page edge. Dense black hatching against open cream paper lets the blaze flicker where the lines thin. Studies, reading nooks, entryways that want one dark accent: the small burning design belongs in any room where books live and lamplight falls low.
