An ornate border of curling acanthus and ribbons frames the opening page Somov drew for the journal World of Art, the lettering set into that flourish like a name carved on a garden gate. Ink lines carry the whole design. Fine crosshatching builds shadow in the scrollwork, pale gray wash softens the corners, and the title words sit centered in an open cartouche, untouched by ornament. Around them, putti and vine scrolls crowd right up to the margin, pen strokes overlapping at the edges as if drawn in one confident sitting. A drawing room or library wall, pale paper behind it, gives the fine linework room to breathe.
