Frontispiece

A dark fortress rises through fog on the opening page of Frontispiece by Konstantin Bogaevsky, towers stacked like basalt organ pipes against a sky of bruised violet and ash. Bogaevsky paints the Cimmerian landscape he knew by heart: serrated cliffs, blind windows, ramparts dissolving into cloud. The brushwork is dry and etched, ink-grey shadows biting into pale vapour, every silhouette sharpened as if cut for a bookplate. Nothing breathes in the scene except the light, which slides cold along one wall of the citadel. A threshold image, then. It suits a hallway or the wall above a writing desk, somewhere readers pass on their way in and out of a story.
