From Kurul to Karakoram Range

The Karakoram fills the frame, ridge behind ridge, in tempera laid thick and dry. Nicholas Roerich titled it From Kurul to Karakoram range, and the road between those names runs straight through the center of the composition. Cobalt dominates. The high snowfields read almost white against bands of ultramarine shadow, while the lower slopes carry a dry, chalky ochre where the light breaks. A thin track of pale ground leads the eye from the foreground toward the massifs, and the air above the summits sits flat and even, painted without glare. Every brushstroke follows the contour of stone. A study or hallway with strong daylight suits it best, where the blues can hold their depth on the wall.
