From Borgarfjörður, Eiríksjökull Glacier, West Iceland

Ice sits heavy on the western horizon. From Borgarfjörður records Eiríksjökull glacier as Asgrimur Jonsson saw it from the lowlands of West Iceland, the ice cap pressed against a wide sky. Jonsson, the painter who defined Icelandic landscape art for a generation, keeps the foreground humble: dark lava soil, patches of moss green, a pale river running toward the viewer. Greys and cold blues carry the middle distance, broken by thin strokes of snow-light along the glacier flank. The brushwork is loose where the land is rough, tighter where the ice holds its ridge. A calm presence for a study, hallway, or reading room that faces north.
