Fritillaria

Fritillaria hangs upside down from its stem, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh paints it exactly that way. The checkered blooms nod toward the ground, petals in muted plum and dusky rose against a pale, quiet ground. Each flower head gets its own rhythm of chequered marking, those small tessellated squares that give the fritillary its snake-skin name. Thin stems curve and cross at deliberate angles, leaves pared back to slender blades. The composition holds its breath between botanical accuracy and pure geometry, watercolor softness controlled by a draftsman hand. Suited to a calm bedroom corner, a hallway with good daylight, or above a writing desk where its measured lines can be studied slowly.
