Water sheets down tiered travertine in thin bright threads. Fountain in Rome shows what the Japanese painter Fujishima Takeji made of the old imperial city, spray and shadow rendered with patient care. Sunlit stone warms from grey to honey while cobalt shadow pools beneath the arches. Brushwork sits dense and oily, describing wet marble, churning basins, figures leaning at the rim. Pigeons scatter white against a deep southern sky. A study or entryway with plain plaster walls lets those greys and deep blues carry the room; the water keeps its quiet sound even indoors.
