Forest

Trees crowd the foreground in Nicholas Roerich's Forest, trunks rising shoulder to shoulder until the eye can go no deeper into the green. The woodland closes over the viewer at once. Cool viridian and slate shadows fill the undergrowth, while the canopy opens into paler greens where light catches the upper branches. Roerich's brushwork runs in firm, stacked strokes, giving each trunk a grain and each bough a weight. Nothing moves except the slow shift of light through leaves. Forest belongs in a reading nook or dim study, where its deep greens read best against lamplight and quiet hours.
