Fontanka near the Summer Garden

Trees rise along the Fontanka near the Summer Garden, their trunks drawn in firm verticals against pale water. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva built this Petersburg scene from crisp woodcut contours rather than color washes. Look closely and the craft shows itself: hatched lines model the embankment parapet, bare branches crosshatch into a lattice of grey, and the canal surface stays almost empty, one thin ripple catching light. The granite quay reads cold and solid; the foliage above it flickers with small, restless strokes. A quiet canal-side scene like this suits a study or reading nook, where its measured grey rhythm rewards long looking.
