Fog in the Mountains. Himalayas

Fog swallows the lower slopes whole. In Nicholas Roerich's Himalayan scene titled Fog in the Mountains, the peaks alone keep their footing above the whiteout, ghost-blue ridgelines floating on a field of pale mist. Tempera-like opacity gives the vapor its body. The snow summits read in cool cobalt and violet shadow, while the fog itself is worked in layered, milky washes that thin toward the horizon. Nothing is spelled out; the mountain is suggested by what the mist leaves visible. A quiet study or reading nook suits its hush, anywhere that rewards a long, slow look.
