Flowers gather in a still-life arrangement by Victor Borisov-Musatov, the Russian Symbolist painter whose quiet, blue-toned world gave ordinary bouquets the gravity of memory. Petal and stem are built up in soft, powdery strokes, the color leaning toward dusty rose, muted violet and greyed green rather than any bright bloom. The bouquet sits in a low vase against a dim ground, its edges dissolving into a hazy atmosphere where form and shadow trade places. Light falls from one side, cooling the highlights and letting the darkest tones pool beneath the blossoms. A bouquet like this settles naturally into a bedroom, a reading nook or any corner where the light is gentle and the mood unhurried.
