Flowers Still Life

Blossoms crowd the surface of this Flowers Still Life by Louis Valtat, petals loaded with paint so thick the bouquet seems built rather than brushed. Red, pink and white blooms press against a shallow space, leaves pushing out in every direction. The color does the heavy lifting. Chrome yellow sits beside vermilion, greens go down in fast strokes that leave ridges of pigment along each stem. Background and foreground trade places, warm pinks advancing while cool shadow holds the edges. Nothing sits politely in a vase; the whole arrangement tilts toward the viewer, brash and joyful. A dining room or sunlit kitchen suits its appetite for color, though a hallway against plain plaster works just as well.
