Flowers

Flowers crowd the canvas edge to edge, petals laid on in thick slabs of cream and rose against a dark ground. Samuel Peploe built the bouquet with deliberate, blocky strokes, letting each bloom keep its own shape rather than dissolving into softness. Stems cross at sharp angles. Leaves flick out in cool green against the deep backdrop, and the vase anchors the whole arrangement low and off centre. Colour does the structural work here: pinks and whites are pushed forward, shadow tones recede, and the gaps between blooms read as solid architecture. It suits a sunlit breakfast room or a hallway that needs a jolt of fresh colour without clutter.
