Flowers on a Mantlepiece

A dense bouquet of poppies, daisies and trailing greenery crowds a shallow ceramic vase set against the warm paneling of a domestic mantlepiece, painted by Pierre Bonnard with his trademark intimacy. Every petal carries unmixed color straight from the tube, vermilion pressed against violet in strokes that stay loose and visible up close. The mantle surface glows amber, its edge suggested by a single confident line rather than any careful outline, while the wall behind dissolves into soft violet shadow. Bonnard cared about the corner of a room as much as any grand view, and this still life proves it. It belongs above a fireplace, in a breakfast room, or on a living room wall that needs warmth.
