Flowers

A gathered bouquet fills the picture plane, blooms pressing outward in thick, buttery strokes of carmine, chrome yellow and leaf green. The title says only Flowers, but the handling belongs wholly to Oleksa Novakivskyi, the Ukrainian painter who brought Post-Impressionist weight to everyday subjects. Look closely and the paint itself becomes the subject. Petals are built in loaded dabs where the brush dragged rather than glided, the background a muddy violet ground that pushes every blossom forward. Stems cross at odd angles in a glass vessel, petals already loosening at the edges, caught at the tipping point between fullness and fall. Suited to a hallway or dining room where its saturated reds and golds read from across the room.
