Flowers by Nikolai Kulbin bursts open in loose watercolor: tulip heads flare in madder red and chrome yellow, stems swaying as if caught mid-gesture by the brush itself. Kulbin was a physician turned painter at the heart of the Russian avant garde, and his floral studies carry that doubled eye. Petals bleed wet into wet, cobalt veins threading through rose, while graphite underdrawing still shows at the leaf edges. Nothing is corrected. The color runs where it wants to run. Hang it where a jolt of unguarded color helps: a hallway that feels too quiet, a studio wall, above a writing desk that needs company.
