Flowers

A dense bouquet fills the frame in Louis Valtat Flowers, petals stacked so thick the stems barely show. Valtat painted with the Fauves, and the color here behaves accordingly. Vermilion and chrome yellow sit against an unapologetic green, each bloom outlined in a darker key. The brushwork is loaded and directional, pigment dragged in short strokes so the petals catch light like cloth rather than glass. A kitchen or sunroom takes this kind of color well, anywhere morning light can meet it halfway.
