Flowers in Blue and White Vase on Orange Table

Flowers crowd out of a blue and white vase, petals tilting every which way across an orange table. Florine Stettheimer paints the still life as pure color theater. Cobalt and chalk white stripes climb the vase while blooms in coral, lilac, and lemon crowd its rim. Beneath them the tabletop burns a saturated orange, its edge cut by a deep green band. Every contour is outlined in a thin dark line, the brushwork loose and playful, the shadows more suggestion than weight. Suited to a dining room or a sunlit breakfast nook, where its saturated palette can hold its own against plain walls and daylight.
