Flowers in a Vase

A gathered bouquet leans and sprawls, caught by Frances Hodgkins at the moment its stems begin to argue with the vase holding them. Her still life treats flowers as restless things, not props. Petals in coral, chrome yellow, and cold blue sit against a loosened background of washed grey and warm ochre, the brushwork quick and loaded in places, scraped thin in others. Leaves cut across the composition at odd angles, and the vessel itself is only suggested, a dark anchor beneath all that movement. British modernism loved this kind of tension between decoration and disorder. It suits a sunlit breakfast room, a cottage hallway, or a reading nook where the light changes hourly.
