Roses, daisies and scarlet poppies crowd the mouth of a tall glazed vase in the still life Flowers in a High Vase, painted by the Russian master Pyotr Konchalovsky. He painted with a loaded brush: petals laid in thick vermilion and rose madder, foliage built up in slabs of olive and viridian, the tall vessel itself a column of cobalt shadow and cream highlight. Every bloom leans, tumbles and overlaps, the whole bouquet barely held together. A dining room, a sunlit kitchen or a reading nook: the bouquet keeps midsummer in the room all year, generous color for the plainest interior.
