Flowers in a Green Vase

A green vase holds the whole composition. Petals in cream, coral and violet crowd around its mouth, painted thick and fast so each bloom keeps the shape of the loaded brush. Peploe builds the still life the way the Scottish Colourists liked to: flat shadow, unmodulated color, a table edge running hard across the lower third. The green of the vase deepens where it meets the stems, almost black at the base, while the background stays a warm, chalky neutral that pushes the flowers forward. A breakfast nook, a hallway table, a kitchen corner that needs one confident shot of color.
