Flowers — Canvas

A vase of cut flowers holds the center of this still life by Fujishima Takeji, blooms opening at different stages across a dark, quiet ground. Takeji trained in the yoga tradition of Western style painting, and the oil handling shows it: thick impasto petals built stroke by stroke, a table edge caught in one clean highlight, background folded into deep olive and umber shadow. Roses, cosmos, and a spray of small white blossoms jostle for light, their reds and pinks pressed against the darkness so each petal reads separately. The brushwork stays loose where petals soften and tightens at the glass and rim of the vessel. A dining room or bedroom corner gains a calm focal point from work like this, its dark palette settling easily beside wood furniture and linen.
