Flowers

Tulips, daisies and striped carnations crowd a shallow field of dark green, stems upright and leaves broad as paddles. The title says only Flowers, and Bauchant means it literally. Blooms press forward in rows, painted with the flat, unblinking confidence of a gardener who counted every petal. Reds run to brick and vermilion; the whites carry a faint grey shadow along each fold. Outlines stay firm, black where petals meet leaf, so the whole arrangement holds together like an embroidered panel. Naive in method, exact in observation, the picture gives each blossom its own face rather than blending them into a haze.
