Flowers and Fruit

A white pitcher holds red and yellow blooms beside a bowl of apples, all pressed forward against a loose blue ground. Valtat paints Flowers and Fruit with thick, squeezed strokes of chrome yellow and vermilion, each petal and fruit skin built from separate dabs of paint that keep their edges. The tabletop tilts toward the viewer in the Fauvist manner, its cloth a slab of unshaded green. Suits a kitchen or dining room where strong color reads well in daylight.
