Flowers and Fruit

Poppies, daisies and split pears crowd a tilted table in Flowers and Fruit, a still life by Harry Phelan Gibb where every bloom is built from thick, directional strokes of paint. Vermillion petals sit beside fruit in bruised yellow and green, the surface worked in heavy impasto that catches light along each ridge. Cobalt shadows anchor the cloth, ochre ground shows through in patches, and the outlines stay loose, drawn rather than traced, in the manner of Cezanne. A dining room or kitchen breakfast nook suits it well, anywhere morning light falls across the table and the paint seems to keep ripening.
