Flowers against a Dark Background

Roses flare out of a near-black ground, each petal loaded with thick paint and turned toward the light. Flowers against a Dark Background by Samuel Peploe strips the still life down to colour and shadow. White and blush blooms cluster at the centre, their edges cut with crimson, while a narrow band of table anchors the composition. The black paint behind is not flat: it breathes, brushed in deep greens and umbers, pushing the flowers forward. Hang it in a study with deep-coloured walls, or a dining room where low light lets the black ground deepen further and the roses carry the room.
