Flower Vase on a Round Table

A round table carries its single burden: a flower vase crowded with blooms. Suzanne Valadon paints still life the way she drew bodies, with a black contour line pressed hard around every petal and stem. The vase sits slightly off center, its rounded belly catching light across the glaze while blossoms tumble outward in loose whites and carmine. Background color presses close behind the arrangement, flattening the space until table and flowers fill the whole surface. Her brushwork stays direct, unblended, honest. A dining room or kitchen corner with plain plaster walls gives this bouquet the same working-table intimacy Valadon gave it on Montmartre.
