Flower-garden

Scarlet poppies and white daisies shoulder through tall grass in Flower-garden, a burst of high summer by the Russian painter Pyotr Konchalovsky, blossoms packed edge to edge across the whole composition. Paint sits thick on the surface, each petal built from loaded strokes of vermilion, chrome yellow and viridian, the greens broken with ultramarine shadow. The beds read like still life blown open, blooms stacked in dense color blocks instead of scattered across a tidy lawn.
