Flood Near Nantes

A swollen river swallows the low ground outside Nantes. Gustave Loiseau paints the flood at eye level, willows standing waist-deep in water that mirrors every pale sky. His brushwork stays quick and broken, small touches of violet, ochre and cold grey building the surface of a drowned meadow. Rooftops and tree lines sit far back, hemmed in by mist. Reflections do half the work here, doubling each trunk and bank until water and air nearly merge. In a hallway or study, this Post-Impressionist river scene brings a hushed, rain-washed calm.
