Fishing Vessels in Arkhangelsk

Masts and rigging cross a low silver sky over the harbor at Arkhangelsk, the subject Valentin Serov set down in this northern seascape. Fishing vessels rest at anchor, hulls dark against pale water. Oil paint goes on in thin, brisk strokes, the palette pulled down to slate grey, cold green and tar black. Wet reflections wobble beneath the boats. A wharf line and distant rooftops sit low on the horizon, leaving most of the surface to water and weather. It belongs in a study or a hallway where the light runs cool, a northern harbor scene for readers of sea journals and lovers of quiet, overcast coasts.
