Fish

Gills, fins and a forked tail dissolve into flat geometry in Fish by Bart van der Leck, the Dutch painter whose radical simplifications helped launch De Stijl. Vermilion and cobalt triangles slide against each other across a chalk white ground, the tail separated a few millimeters from the body so the animal seems to swim. Black contours lock every shape in place, the same disciplined palette he applied to carpets and stained glass. Set it in a dining room or study, where the clean edges read at a glance, cheerful against plain plaster and pale wood.
