Fireworks

Bursts of pale gold crack open against a night sky in Fireworks, one of Konstantin Somov most theatrical compositions. Darkness dominates, then fractures into light. Somov built the scene in layered gouache, the black of the sky laid over blue-green underpainting while firework trails scatter in ochre, rose and silver. Crowds below read as small dark silhouettes, faces tilted upward, gardens and pavilion roofs barely lit at the edges. Every burst has its own character, some spilling loose, others held tight. A salon wall or a dim hallway suits this nocturne well, where the glowing bursts carry the light of the room themselves.
