Tulolansaari rises from cold Finnish water, its low spine of rock and pine caught in the muted light of a northern afternoon. Nicholas Roerich records the island with the restraint of a painter who knew these shores firsthand. Greys and greens dominate, laid in broad, confident passages. The water sits flat and pale against the darker mass of land, while the sky carries a thin band of silvered cloud.
