Field of Corn — Framed Poster

A wheat field fills the entire canvas, stalks bent and tangled under a heavy summer sky. Louis Valtat painted Field of Corn with the blunt, saturated color that set him apart from his Fauvist contemporaries, letting the crop itself carry the whole composition. Ochre and raw sienna dominate, laid on in short, directional strokes that follow the grain heads. Patches of chrome yellow flare where sunlight hits the field, while shadowed rows sink into burnt umber and olive. The sky above presses down in thick, chalky whites and pale violets, almost touching the tops of the stalks. Nothing recedes far; the horizon sits high, so the earth occupies most of the view. A dining room or sunlit kitchen suits it well, somewhere the color of harvest can work at full strength across a wide wall.
