Field Flowers

Wild poppies and cornflowers crowd the meadow edge in Field Flowers by Octav Bancila. The Romanian painter builds the bouquet loosely, petals laid down in quick, loaded strokes of red and blue against dry grass. Look closely and the handling shows itself: thick impasto on the poppy heads, thinner washes where the green stems twist, a pale sky barely visible behind the tangle. Dusty ochre grounds the lower half so the blossoms burn hotter by contrast. Every stem leans a different way, nothing arranged. A sunlit corner of a kitchen or a country hallway suits it well, anywhere morning light can meet those reds.
