Fences

Weathered wooden fences zigzag down a dirt lane, each post and crossbar built up in short, loaded strokes. Istvan Nagy titled the scene plainly and let the rickety boundary carry the whole composition. Ochre fields, olive scrub, a scumbled grey sky overhead. Paint sits thick along the sunlit rails and thin over the baked ground, so the wood seems to soak up the light. Cool violet shadows pool where the timbers cross, and a gap in the line opens onto the plain. Suited to a study or hallway with warm plaster walls, where its earthbound palette and unhurried rhythm read well at close range and from down the corridor.
