Farm with Shadoof

A long-handled shadoof leans over the water at the edge of a Hungarian farmstead, its counterweight pole cutting a clean diagonal against the sky. This is Farm with Shadoof by Janos Tornyai. Painted in the loose, sun-bitten brushwork of the Hungarian plein air tradition, the scene holds thatch, mud walls, and a crooked fence rendered in ochre, umber, and dusty green. Tornyai loads the foreground with thick impasto where the dirt track turns, then thins his paint to let heat shimmer across the pond. The drawing of the well mechanism is quick but exact, every rope and pivot legible. It suits a kitchen, a country hallway, or any room that wants the dry light of the Alföld plain in it.
