Farm Steading

Grey slate roofs press low against a whitewashed gable, stone byres and cart sheds drawn in quick, certain strokes. Farm Steading belongs to Samuel Peploe and to the Scottish countryside he painted with unflinching directness. The composition pivots on that cluster of farm buildings, their chimneys dark against a sky washed in cool blue and soft grey. Look closer and the brushwork carries the weight: thick impasto over the roofline, ochre and raw umber dragged through the yard, patches of spring green breaking through bare earth. Light falls flat and honest, the way it does over Scottish farmland before noon. A gatepost, a pale wall, a strip of churned ground, each given its own temperature. Suited to a kitchen with stone counters, a farmhouse table, or a stairwell that needs a landscape rooted in working land rather than prettiness.
