Facing

A head turns straight toward you and refuses to look away. Facing, by Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, holds that confrontation at its center, the gaze doing all the work the composition needs. Look closely and the drawing sharpens: hatched strokes build the cheekbone, ink pooled dark along the jaw, a few dry-brush flickers for hair. The dadaist instinct shows in what she leaves unresolved, one eye finished, the other merely suggested, so the stare feels mid-motion.
