Fabric Design with Floral Awakening

Blossoms lift and unfold across the whole surface, stems bending in slow spirals as if woken by the first warm hour of morning. Koloman Moser drew this fabric design for Backhausen, the Viennese textile house whose looms carried the Wiener Werkstätte look into ordinary rooms. Flat, unmodulated color fills each petal, the outlines crisp and even, drawn to repeat across yardage without losing rhythm. Flowers open at different stages, tight bud, half cup, full spread, so the eye travels the pattern the way spring travels a border. Curves answer curves; nothing idles. A hallway, a sunroom, or a dressing room would take this botanical repeat gladly, especially against plain plaster and pale wood furniture.
