Steam pours across the platform as an express train arrives, its dark engine nose breaking through the haze while passengers bunch at the edge of the rails. Hans Baluschek built his reputation on scenes like this one, where the machinery of the modern city presses directly into ordinary lives. Look closely and the picture divides itself into layers: soot-grey smoke thickening overhead, the black iron mass of the locomotive, and small figures in coats and hats caught mid-stride below. Signals, gaslight, and wet track glint against the murk, and every stroke carries the grit of coal dust and iron. A study, a hallway, or a den with an industrial edge suits this image well.
