Everest

Everest rises alone, its summit held in a wedge of snow that seems lit from within. Nicholas Roerich gives the peak the plainness of an icon: one massif, one sky, no ornament. The lower slopes move through slate and violet shadow, brushed in long tempera-like veils that leave the ridgeline hard as bone. Above, the snowfield burns pale gold against a deepening blue, the transition sudden, almost surgical. Thin washes of white over cold ground give the air its altitude. A study or reading room with low light and wooden shelves suits it. Anything too bright would flatten the summit.
