Everest

Everest rises alone, its summit glowing against a high Himalayan sky. Nicholas Roerich painted the mountain as a presence, not a landmark, letting the peak fill the upper reach of the composition. Cold violet shadow climbs the lower slopes while the crown burns in pale rose and gold, the light of late day caught on snow. Thin cloud bands cut horizontally across the massif, and the tonal washes read like tempera laid in broad, unhesitating strokes. The void of sky presses down on the ridgelines.
