Low sun settles behind a broad hill ridge while the whole valley cools toward violet and slate. Evening by Nicholas Roerich carries that exact hour, when warmth drains upward and shadow spreads across the land. Distant dwellings shrink to small dark marks at the foothill line. The sky holds the strongest color, banded in amber, rose and deepening blue that bleeds downward into the haze. Roerich paints the terrain in flat, deliberate masses, letting broad sweeps of tempera tone carry the light rather than small detail. A river or plain catches one last pale reflection before dark.
