Etretat

White chalk cliffs rise from a pebble beach at Etretat, and Gustave Loiseau recorded them in his quick, trembling brushstroke, sea foam breaking pale at their feet. Short, loaded strokes of oil paint build the rock face in cream, ochre and violet, the great stone arch cuts the headland, and the needle stands offshore. Grey-green Channel water shifts beneath a sky worked in fast, comma-like clouds, rooftops of the fishing town gathered at the base. A seaside study or a light-filled hallway suits it well, the cool whites resting quietly against plain plaster, bleached wood and soft linen.
