Elderberry Bush. Decorative Landscape. Pskov

Cut pinnate leaves and heavy dark berry clusters crowd the foreground of Elderberry bush, Decorative landscape, Pskov, a scene Konstantin Yuon composed in flat planes of oil color. The humble shrub turns into pure ornament. Behind the branches, a whitewashed church facade and a single green dome root the view in an ancient Russian town. Aubergine fruit reads almost black against cream blossom lace; contour lines do the drawing while broad color fields carry the pattern. A reading nook beside a north window, a study with plain oak shelves, an entryway in lime plaster: the dusky purple tones hold their own in each.
