Elbrus, Caucasus

Elbrus rises alone, a broad snow-bound summit holding the top of the composition. This Nicholas Roerich view of the Caucasus belongs to his late mountain cycle, where peaks read as figures rather than scenery. The great cone sits in pale blue and bone-white, its glacier fields rendered in long unhurried strokes. Foothills below shift toward violet and deep cobalt, while a cold sky presses down in flat, even bands of color. Roerich tempers oil with tempera-like opacity, giving the surface a chalky, fresco-like stillness that flatters the double-summited giant of the Caucasus range. It belongs in a study or quiet hallway, somewhere the eye can rest on distance.
