Eiffel Tower and The Seine

Iron lattice rises over the river in Eiffel Tower and The Seine, a Paris scene by Pierre Bonnard where the tower threads upward through a haze of violet and citron. Bonnard breaks the water into flecks of green, rose, and cobalt, each stroke visible, the current carrying a broken reflection of the tower. Barges and quay walls anchor the foreground while rooftops dissolve at the edges, painted in the flat, layered touch of the Nabis. A study or reading nook gains a window onto riverside Paris here, the pale afternoon light of the quays settling quietly around it.
